Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment method that has been used in China for thousands of years. In acupuncture, thin sterile disposable needles are used, and they are placed at certain points in the body, either to prevent or to treat ailments. Acupuncture affects the body, for example, by causing it to produce pain-relieving substances such as endorphins. This largely accounts for the pain-relieving effect as well as muscle relaxation and other beneficial effects of acupuncture.

Acupuncture needles are placed either just below the skin or even several centimeters deep, depending on the location. The usual treatment time is an hour. During the treatment, there may be a tingling sensation or other mild sensations, but significant pain should not be felt. When the needles are inserted, there's usually a brief uncomfortable sensation, which in acupuncture is called Qi and is part of the process. In some cases, a light electric current can be combined with acupuncture using a specially designed device. The electric current enhances the pain-relieving effect of acupuncture.

Leo Tenhumäki also does acu- and trigger point pressing, which is suitable as an alternative to acupuncture, for example, when a person has a severe fear of needles.
